Transform an Old Door

There are so many uses for old doors.  You can find old doors at most any vintage or antique shops, craigslist, or yard sales.  When we lived in a one bedroom, 600 SF apartment for the first 5 yrs we were married, lack of storage was a big issue for us especially in the kitchen.  We basically did not have any counter space and we also didn't have anywhere to hang towels. I have a lot of spices and herbs and I just couldn't bring myself to leave them in a spice rack cluttering up what little counters we had.  So the hunt was on for a cheap solution...

Like so many young couples, we lived at Ikea for about the first year of being married.  Affordability and accessibility of all home goods in one location, being the main reasons.

Well, we happen to find this door from the Ikea "As-Is" section (which I always recommend perusing) for about $10.00. We painted it a semi-glossy black and added an inexpensive wire shelving unit for a spice rack and shelving accesories that we also purchased from Ikea. We also added some furniture felt pads to the back upper corners, so that as it rested against the wall it would not make any marks. I never thought this would come with us when we purchased our first home but it currently stands in our kitchen as we wait to renovate it!

I do not know if the particular shelving unit I used is available but here is a comparable one for only $2.99!  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90072648/

This was a pretty easy and very affordable project.  A transformed door can add character to a kitchen or really any room and also provide a practical solution when there is a lack of storage.
