DIY Dry Erase Board
This project is such an easy one for any DIY-er! Or really any wanna-be DIY-er, like myself! Go to your local thrift store and peruse their frame section. Look past the beat up frames or the ugly pictures posted underneath that glass. You will find a gem that is probably less than $5.00, I promise.
Then head to your local fabric store, JoAnn Fabrics, etc. and choose a fabric that you want to put in the frame. I choose a burlap since it has texture and it's a neutral color. Keep in mind that any super busy pattern you choose may make it difficult to read any words on the glass. 1 Yard would be more than sufficient. You can get less but I liked having leftover burlap for other small crafty things.
Next up, decide on the paint and color of your choosing. I choose a slate gray color. But, instead of purchasing some new paint, I actually used an old paint sample that was collecting dust on a shelf in the basement. I think paint samples are the PERFECT option for small projects like this. Purchasing a quart or gallon size would just be way too much, so opt for a sample size! Spray paint would work too. Paint products such as Krylon make a 3 oz can, called Short Cuts. Again, great size for projects such as these!
Before you paint, make sure you have cleaned up any dirt or dust that may have collected on that frame. If needed, you may need to do a quick light sanding (use a Very Fine Sanding Block: 220-240 grit) if the frame has a gloss finish to it. This will allow the paint to adhere better. Then wipe it down again with a clean cloth.
Remove the glass, picture, and backing from the frame. Place a garbage bag, old towel, etc underneath the frame and paint according to the directions.
As your frame is drying, cut your fabric to size. Once your frame is done, you can wrap the fabric around the picture backing, lay in the frame, secure and Voila! My frame was a gold frame, so I went back over the it with the sanding block once it was dried to allow some gold to come through.
I really love this great idea! Thanks for sharing!
